RIMINI TRAVEL GUIDE

Rimini is an Emilian city of 149.412 inhabitants. In the area were found traces of settlements dating back to the lower Paleolithic, but the first stable settlements dates back to the arrival of the Celts, who keep the territory for almost a century, until they are defeated by the Romans, who make Ariminum, ancient name of the city, an important commercial hub between the north and south of Italy.

After the Greek gothic war, the city was conquered by the Byzantines and then donated to the Church in 756.

In the twelfth century it became a free municipality and throughout the thirteenth century Guelphs and Ghibellines contended for the control of the city, until the seizure of power of the Malatesta family.

In 1509 Rimini became part of the Papacy until the arrival of Napoleon, who annexed it to the Cispadane Republic.

When one thinks of Rimini, immediately springs to mind the summer and the sea of the Romagna Riviera, with its thousand activities, perfect for spending a summer of fun, perhaps with a group of friends. But Rimini is not just sea, because walking around the city is a continuous discovery of squares and neighborhoods that allow you to relive its history. The Bridge of Augustus and Tiberius and the Arch of Augustus, the oldest remaining, date back to the era of ancient Rome and recall its grandeur, not surprisingly Rimini boasts the largest archaeological heritage of Emilia Romagna, which includes three magnificent domus and what remains of a large amphitheater. Beautiful Piazza Cavour, with the Palazzo dell'Arengo characterized by the large loggia and the crenellated bell tower, where the council of the city meeting and where you can admire the fourteenth-century frescoes of the Rimini school. The Castle of Sismondo, fortress and noble residence at the same time, is an integral part of the Malatesta walls, built to defend the city. You cannot miss a visit to the Tempio Malatestiano, a monumental mausoleum designed by Leon Battista Alberti. The façade characterized by the large portal, is incomplete, and allows you to still see the old medieval gabled façade. The interior has a single nave with side chapels, while the ceiling is composed of simple trusses of exposed wood, and here you can admire a beautiful fresco by Piero della Francesca depicting Sigismondo Malatesta and dating back to the mid-1400s, and the Crucifix of Rimini, by Giotto. The Church of Sant'Agostino is also very beautiful, one of the most impressive in the city, whose bell tower stands out above the roofs, and inside it you can admire some important paintings. Film lovers will be able to see in the Emilian city the evocative atmosphere of Fellini's films, which was born here, like the colorful murals of Borgo San Giuliano, depicting scenes and characters from his films.

Events in rimini

Many events take place in Rimini during the year: throughout the year there is the Sagra Musicale Malatestiana, an interesting musical event known all over the world. On the occasion of the Feast of St. Joseph, on March 19, the Foghereccia Festival is organized, a large bonfire symbolizing the end of winter and the arrival of spring, with food and wine stands and local craft markets. At the end of March there is Streeat Food Truck, festival of the best street food that comes from all over Italy and that allows you to get to know the excellences of food and wine in our country. At the end of June there is "Dj set, sardoncini, mare e tramonto", a unique occasion in which fishermen and DJs come together for a night of perfect union between the new musical tendencies and the food of the seafaring tradition. In mid-July there is the Notte Rosa, also known as the Summer New Year's Eve, so called because the main monuments are illuminated with pink light, while concerts and shows are organized along the entire Romagna coast, and end with a grandiose fireworks display. In mid-September, on the occasion of the Nuvolari Grand Prix, the historic cars taking part in the competition parade through the city center and are exhibited in Piazza Fellini.
